I bound it to my DX6i exactly according to the manual. For the first few flights, I left it in safe mode and was amazed at how easy it was to fly, especially in a light wind. There seems to be very little difference between intermediate and experienced modes. It flies great in all three modes. All in all, it doesn't get any easier than this. In my humble opinion, the huge fun factor is worth way more than the price.

Brilliant! I have way more planes than talent, and my fingers have only just learned basic 3-channel maneuvers. I have flown my Sport Cub once indoors and yesterday, outdoors. It was an easy hand toss; I landed in the soft grass, and it nosed over at near zero ground speed. With my DX4e, I could fly with rudder and elevator on R stick and then with aileron and elevator on R stick. AS3x and SAFE make it almost Kamikaze-proof. I could grasp both modes and flew in both fairly well. This is THE quintessential 4ch trainer. Bonus...trainer cord DX4E to my other DX4E = cheapest, SAFE-est trainer system out there. This AND the new Spacewalker are great-flying and great-looking airplanes. Very pleased with both.

I'm a 11 year old aviation enthusiast. My first R/C plane was the Hobby Zone Champ. My second plane was the Trojan T-28 by E-flite. I just recently bought the Sport Cub S and bound it to my DX6i and by far this plane is the best plane I ever flew. Slow stall speeds, very durable. My sister actually fell on it it the first night and it has a little bend to the wing. The only complaint I have is the landing gear - its impossible to keep the main gear centered and when its off centered you can't adjust the gear. But over all it's a very nice plane. Keep on making these awesome planes, Hobby Zone.

Great Fun, but Can Be Improved

I flew mine several times, but the motor would suddenly stop, then restart immediately. I contacted Hobby Zone, and they happily exchanged it for a new one. It did the same thing. At the time, I thought it was radio interference, but I now realize it happens anywhere. I have since seen two more of these aircrafts, and they all do it. I purchased a Spectrum DX5e transmitter, and the problem went away. I assume there is some problem with the supplied transmitter. You can buy a BNF Cub for $99 and a DX5e for $60, in the end spending only $30 more than the RTF Cub.

I also had great difficulty flying the Cub in expert mode. It was extremely sensitive in pitch. I fixed this by taping 6-32 nut to the most forward part of the bottom of the cowl to move the CG forward. This made the Cub much more stable in pitch, yet it is still fully aerobatic. I later drilled a small hole in that same spot, put 2 small lead shots that weighed the same as the nut, and taped over the hole.

All in all, I love this little airplane and have flown hundreds of flights. I have let beginners fly it in beginner mode, and they were all surprised how easy it is.

    Sport Cub Impressions and Ideas

I am in Brooklyn, NY. My flying field is along the Narrows / NY Harbor. It is about 3 baseball fields across (when no one is there) and is subject to breezes. There are times when I can get out and this airplane is just right.

I don't have experience with the Champ; I wanted ailerons. The Sport Cub S is a great step up from the Night Vapor if you want a 'rigid' outdoor airplane. I tried the Carbon Cub SS before this; actually, a few Carbon Cubs! I found the Carbon Cub a little tricky to fly. It had awesome performance, but I was letting it get ahead of me too much. The Sport Cub is a much more predictable and stable flyer. It is incredibly light and easy to hand launch or ground roll takeoff.

    Mods:
I use a 45c battery in place of the 25c. I also use the EFC-721 camera velcroed to the top of the plane to video the flights. The prop arc looks like blinds going across the field of vision, so I am going to mount it differently. What's cool is to get up to altitude and cut the motor and glide for a while. The video is great with the right lighting (when it's not dark out, and the sun is high and out of the way).

    Possible mod:
This airplane has a bigger wing (and self supported) than the Carbon Cub. What I might do sometime is try to put the Carbon Cub SS electronics and motor/prop in the Sport Cub S airframe and see how it feels.

For now, the Sport Cub S is just the right size and has the right characteristics for my little field. I use the Spectrum DX4e with it. It is very easy to get out and fly for 10-20 minutes vs. planning to spend a morning getting to a bigger field with a bigger plane. One day, though.

I also use a 180 QX quad with a camera and am learning the 180 CFX helicopter.

This is my first RC aircraft and it's very easy to fly.  It needed quite a bit of adjustment on the rudder and elevator to trim it out but was easy to fix .  Only problem I've had is on Beginner it's hard to get this baby to come down sometimes.  It's so light that crashes/landings in my yard and overgrown field have little chance of damaging it.  Hard to actually do a real landing on my property but it will take off from the gravel driveway.  Overall a very fun little plane to fly.

May Need More Production Quality Control

I purchased this to assess SAFE. I also bought floats to obtain $100 free shipping. On assembly of the float struts, there was obviously considerable alignment needed to fit the floats to the fuselage. Therefore, where is the center of gravity?? The manual says, "For best flight, place battery farthest aft." Assuming CG to be 25% to 30% MAC, this (on wheels) was very tail heavy. With the battery fully forward, the airplane was slightly tail heavy. On my first flight with SAFE off to determine who was in control, I encountered a continuous sharp left turn and also a steep climb with more than 1/2 power. On return to the hangar, all neutrals were checked on the airplane and transmitter with little, if any, adjustment required for visual alignment. The next flight was with SAFE on. It worked quite well. The transmitter is a DX5e with 2 positions for SAFE or "You have control. Be careful."

Conclusion: I will manage, but if a beginner encounters these issues, there will be disappointment.

    Motor Cuts Out

I have purchased two of theses planes (both RTF). Both planes had problems with the motors cutting out during flight. I finally bind them to a third radio and the motor cutting stopped but then they would fly very erratic in expert mode.  I think the Duet is a better plane for someone trying out their wings for the first time. I also have a Pitt and a P17 and I love them both!

A low speed, I mean very low speed, bump into the ground busted the motor mount right off. It has disappointingly delicate construction. I had barely 10 minutes of flight time until this happened. I recommend other fliers to take the step up to the Delta Ray, which is just as easy to fly, can go fast enough to enjoy, and is not incredibly delicate like this one.
