Welcome to our 2017 Holiday Gift Guide, where you’ll find our suggestions for the best value in RC planes, quadcopters, cars/trucks, helicopters and boats. Whether you know your way around radio control vehicles or don’t have a clue, this guide is provided to help you find the perfect gift.
When you are browsing the site, remember that RTF (Ready-to-Fly) and RTR (Ready-to-Run) means that everything is included. BNF (Bind-N-Fly) versions are less expensive because they don’t include a radio transmitter.

R/C Drones are still hot this year. The trend is towards first person viewer (FPV) smaller drones that send video back to your smartphone. The Kodo FPV is a great example of a great entry level unit. The Blade Inductrix FPV Plus is very popular. You do need a separate 5.8 GHz screen to complete it though. For a complete racer setup, look at the Vusion Houseracer RTF. This sends high quality video to a separate screen included in the package. A set of hoops and obstacles is separately available to use in the house for a challenge. All of these are suitable for use indoors or out.
In R/C Airplanes, electronics again has made strides this year. The inclusion of the SAFE gyro trainer system is what makes a trainer plane more than a toy. The versions that are of greatest interest are the HBZ4400 Sport Cub S, which is small but a great plane, the Champ S+, which is a little bigger but includes not only SAFE, but GPS that sets up a virtual fence to prevent flyaways, and on top, the new HBZ3200 Carbon Cub S 1.3m RTF, with all that and auto take-off and land, and pattern hold too. All come equipped with a “Panic Button” that levels the plane in case of out-of-control situations.
In R/C Surface vehicles, Traxxas is the most popular brand, and rock crawlers are gaining in popularity. They aren’t fast but are liked because of the crazy agility of their suspensions to climb over obstacles. Good examples in order of size and cost would be the ECX00012T1 Temper 1/24 scale, which fits in the palm of your hand, to the ECX01003 Temper 1/18th scale, to the top of the line TRA820564SILVER, which also requires batteries and charger.
You can’t go wrong with a monster truck with the big wheels like a Traxxas Stampede or ARRMA Granite ARAD36NL. These vehicles are fast and the big tires help beginners climb, jump, and otherwise bash without breaking as easily.
Many of the vehicle seem to be more expensive for no particular reason other than they say “brushless” motor. These are the motors that push the cars to 50mph or 60mph, or even higher speeds. We don’t recommend them for beginners and the batteries required to hit those speeds are separate from the base package, and expensive.
R/C Boats are hotter than they’ve been recently due to two advances: (1) many now have brushless motors and are extremely fast, and (2) the addition of self-righting designs such as the PRB08016 Recoil and the larger version, the PRB08022. If you see the videos on these, you will want one!
It used to be that R/C Helicopters were a daunting challenge to learn to fly, but the inclusion of the SAFE system, with a Panic button has changed that. We recommend starting with a BLH4100 120 SR RTF or larger BLH2600 Blade 200 S RTF. These are real Hobby grade choppers for which we have parts and support.
Be a good shopper and look at the videos and check out reviews. If you have a question, we are more than happy to make a recommendation. We hope your holidays are wonderful and we look forward to helping with your shopping questions!
