The E-flite® Apprentice® S 15e RTF airplane is the most intelligent RC airplane ever offered by Horizon Hobby. At its heart is groundbreaking SAFE™ (Sensor Assisted Flight Envelope) technology that makes RC flight incredibly easy, even for the least experienced user. Its combination of spatial awareness provides flight envelope protection which adds a degree of security never before available, while its smooth flight capability battles windy conditions so that all you feel is control that’s crisp and responsive. Multiple levels of flight envelope protection are provided that can be reduced or removed as your skills progress, yet the “panic” feature is always there to instantly return the model to level flight if you ever lose orientation.
Requiring just minutes to assemble, you’ll appreciate how its quiet brushless power system delivers outstanding performance with long, enjoyable flights. Plus it’s built to last from lightweight Z-Foam™ material that’s tough enough to handle everyday flying punishment without getting bent out of shape. After you’ve mastered the basics of flight, the Apprentice S is capable of performing a complement of aerobatic maneuvers such as loops, rolls, and even inverted flight. You can also turn the Apprentice S into a great floatplane by simply adding the specially designed E-flite Apprentice S Floats (EFLA550)—sold separately.
I own a Glassair Sportsman and love it. However, one of the sponsored IMAC flyers brought a demo Apprentice to our club, RAMS, in NC. Everyone flew it and was amazed. We put it on approach, cut the throttle, laid the transmitter on the ground, and it actually landed itself. It also took off on it's own. This is a crazy smart plane. If you can't learn to fly with this plane, you can't learn!
This is by far the best trainer there is on the market. On Beginner mode, you can't crash it. When you get better, click it to Intermediate. When you get really good, click it up to Expert. This is absolutely a must for beginners. This plane easily earns a five star rating.
I take the Apprentice out to fly, and without fail, I always have a bad landing or takeoff. Styrofoam can take it. In fact, I beef up critical corners with epoxy, so the styrofoam is hardly effected. Balsa wood means hours of repair for a minor crash. This plane is powerful and can do a lot of tricks. I have broken the fuselage in half, and the next day I am up and running with an epoxy repair. Styrofoam is the future for RC planes.
I bought the Apprentice 15e for my son who has never flown an R/C plane. Leaving him to his own devices--but with me beside him only offering suggestions--he flew it twice yesterday. His take-offs were textbook perfect, and once in the air the Apprentice flew as if it were a full-size airplane being piloted by an expert. It was rock-steady in the air, seemingly oblivious to the mild gusts of wind that sometimes toss my Super Cub around. His first landing was a perfect 3-point touchdown, and the large wheels on the Apprentice easily handled the wet grass when it rolled beyond the end of the paved runway. His second landing was a bit more interesting. He came in a little too fast and bounced the front wheel a few times, but the airplane handled it well, and after losing some speed it settled down onto all 3 wheels and rolled to a stop. I've seen far more experienced pilots, myself included, goober the landing after a serious bounce, but the Apprentice just shrugged it off.
The only complaint I have about the Apprentice is that you have to bind it to the transmitter every time you change the battery. That's kind of a hassle since the wing must be removed to access the receiver to insert the bind plug. I'm going to rectify that problem by installing a servo extension lead for the bind plug and route it through the battery box.
If you're considering getting an R/C airplane for yourself but have no flying experience, this is the airplane to get! I first started flying about a year ago with the Super Cub RTF trainer, but if I had known back then what I know now, I would have chosen the Apprentice 15e as my 1st R/C airplane. You simply can't go wrong with this airplane!
I got the plane a week ago, and I have flown it every day since then. It flies like a dream. It will just about fly itself. It is very fun and easy to fly. One of my friends saw it and ordered one too. This plane is very fun to play with and easy to fly, so if you are thinking about buying a plane, buy this one.
This plane and their Cub are really the best trainers out there. I first started with their cub. I don’t know how many times I crashed it learning to fly, but I picked it up, dusted it off, and it’s ready to fly again. The Apprentice is a great plane to learn to fly. It has ailerons which makes it a step up from the Cub. I took this plane out of box, put it together very easily, then took it to a flying field. I was a little scared but flew it all by myself in first mode with no problems at all. Now, I fly in all three modes. I have lots of fun and do loops. So far, all I have done is loops, but my brother, who has been flying for years, has done more with no problems, and landings are great even on grass. This plane and the Cub were both worth the money. I already got my money out of both and would recommend both to anyone for a day of fun.
My son and I both bought one of these. They are great! I put it together very fast. We charged the batteries and were flying in less then a hour. On the trainer mode it almost flies itself. I would recommend this plane to a beginner. It's a great plane for the price; everything you need to fly is in the box.
I went from the Champ to the Apprentice in one step. The ease of flying is amazing. The panic switch is something to marvel. My far more experienced flyer friends found the gyro system to be comfortable, especially in higher wind conditions. Save your money and step up to this colossal breakthrough in flying enjoyment.
I already had some experience when I bought my Apprentice with SAFE Technology, so I can only guess that as a trainer for the totally inexperienced, this plane would get the job done well. With some RC simulator time you could probably go from takeoff through the landing by yourself easily. The panic switch is incredible. I used it the other day when I was coming out of inverted a bit too low and diving towards a tall streetlight. Straightened up in about 1 second - no kidding. The three flight modes are very different and range from easy to medium to full aerobatic. The Apprentice loops with ease, even without a lot of speed, and rolls are surprisingly good--better than my Corvalis. Mine will serve as a go-to airplane when I don't want to white-knuckle it and I want a nice pleasure flight. You can't go wrong with this plane. It's a great product. Battery lead was a bit short and I had to put a 4" extension on it. The wheels go side-to-side a bit too much on the axles, but that is easily fixable. Thanks, E-flite!
Wow! lots of fun. This is an excellent plane and holds up to hard landings. DO NOT PUT it into a full dive at full throttle; something happens to the computer and you will not pull out. It is the best money I have ever spent. I let my boss fly it, and he ordered one the next day. My daughter, who is not a big RC person, landed it perfectly.
This is an awesome plane, so easy to fly. I bought it yesterday and flew it today. Thanks to the guys at Hobby Zone for going the extra mile to find me a plane in the warehouse. These are getting popular and a bit hard to find.
I haven't flown RC planes in more than 15 years, and even back then I was a beginner. This plane was at the upper end of my budget range (actually a little higher), but I am glad I bought it. It took about 30 minutes to assemble. I was a bit nervous since I hadn't flown in years. I put it on beginner mode and hit full throttle. It literally took off by itself, and I did not have to make any adjustments until it climbed to about 100 feet, and I wanted to turn. I flew for a bit and then brought it in for a landing. I cut back the throttle, lined it up, and the plane landed itself. Unbelievable! I read many reviews before I bought this plane. They were spot on. If you're a beginner, do yourself a huge favor and spend the extra money to get this plane. You will not be disappointed.
It really helped me learn to fly. I enjoy the plane every time I take her up.
This is the easiest and best plane I've ever flown.
I've loved flying RC planes for many years now but it's so far between that I still consider myself a beginner. Can't say enough about this one. It'll be around for a long time unless I do something really stupid. Plenty of power, lightweight so you aren't using much battery as you cruise around and it has good glide characteristics. My 11 y/o can take off, fly and land it by himself. In fact, my uncle has never flown a RC plane and after a little instruction I let him take off, fly and land in an open area on his own and now he wants one. Both of them flying in beginner mode of course, but it's also very responsive and fun in the more advanced mode too.
If you're just getting into it or don't have a personal instructor to tether to and are maybe tired of crashing planes and wasting money trying to learn, this plane will help build confidence and you'll save money by not having to buy a plane every time you fly. You'll actually gain some experience in this hobby by spending the money once. In short, if you're like me, this plane is for you.
I know others have said that on beginner mode that this plane can land itself, (and it can) but I would still recommend some flare on touchdown just to be that much easier on the nose gear which is attached to a steering / rudder servo. Besides, it's good practice and habit to form transitioning into advanced mode and it helps bleed off airspeed resulting in shorter ground roll and less bounce.
Have fun! You're going to love this plane.
I can't say enough positive things about this plane. It's a fantastic trainer that my 10 year flies without problems. I takeoff, throw it into beginner or intermediate mode, and he takes it from there. If he gets into trouble, I just reach over and flip the panic button. For me, having the panic button allows me to fly inverted and roll without any worry that I am going to crash. This is an incredible investment!
I love(d) this plane. The only negative feedback I have (and it's an easy fix) is that the skill level switch needs to be flipped around. If you miss the panic switch, which is the same size and shape and directly behind the beginner/intermediate/advanced switch, and you pull on the latter, you're changing the setting to advanced. That's obviously not where you want to be if you're trying to pull the panic switch. If you're in advanced mode and you push it to beginner, it does the same thing as pulling the panic switch. If the switch is flipped around and you miss the panic switch (like i did) and pull the skill switch... you guessed it: the plane will level out. I'm very new to the hobby, and I'm already addicted. I learned a $105 lesson about the switch. While I loved working on the plane after the accident, I did not enjoy spending the money to replace all the parts that broke when I pulled on the wrong switch with no time for a second chance. After 15 flights, I got a little too cocky. Overall, this is a fantastic plane! I love it! I don't want anyone else to make the same mistake I did. BUY ONE! FLIP THE SWITCH YOURSELF BEFORE YOU TAKE YOUR FIRST FLIGHT!
If you are new to RC planes, this plane will not disappoint. You will be able to learn to fly with ease and probably with no crashes (buy the suggested flight simulator: Phoenix 5.0). To add, the plane at full power is plenty fast and fun to fly.
To give an idea of how easy this plane is to fly because of the SAFE system, I will tell you about my first flight with this plane. The conditions were horrible; it was quite windy (7-8 mph with gusts), but I couldn't stand having the plane together on the runway and not at least making it taxi, so began to taxi around. Once again, to remind you, it was windy; so windy in fact that a couple of times, the wind knocked the plane over on its wing (just like the simulator had predicted), but that didn't stop me. Finally, I was taxiing into the wind when all of a sudden, the plane took flight. It got about two feet in the air, and by instinct when I saw it in the air, I gave it full power and off she went. The plane flew beautifully despite the wind, thanks to the SAFE system which kept the wings level unless I instructed the plane to turn. That day, on my first flight, in heavy winds, I successfully made four take-offs and four landings with no crashes.
If you want to learn to fly RC planes, this is the plane to start with.
Last, I want to say thank you to Hobby Zone for their excellent service. Being new to RC planes, I have needed help on technical issues a few times. Every time I have called the 888-953-9663 number, a polite knowledgeable person has answered the phone within the second ring to answer my question solving my problem with no transfers, no holds; conversation over within two minutes maximum. Thanks again Hobby Zone for helping making my new hobby pleasurable.
I have never flown an RC plane before I purchased this yesterday. The SAFE technology for this plane is amazing. My first flight session was a resounding success and was a ton of fun. I used beginner mode to take off and land 5 or 6 times during the session.
I initially flew with beginner mode in the air the first few times and then eventually switched to intermediate mode to try more aggressive maneuvers. On my last flight of the session, I switched to advanced once I got up high and did a barrel roll and an overhead loop. I only had to use the panic button twice during the session, and each time the plane recovered perfectly.
I did have one small crash on my very first flight because I misjudged how much space I would need to land, and I hit a fence before the plane came to a full stop. It broke the backshell of the nose cone on the propeller. But that did not stop me from 5 more flights after that, since the nose cone is not really needed to fly. I was flying total for probably 10-12 minutes, and I still had plenty of battery left but it was getting dark so I stopped. I am very surprised by the power this plane has. I flew most of the time on 50% power and only throttled full for take off and for the overhead loop. The landing in beginner mode was so easy (as soon as I learned how much space I needed to land). I am very pleased with this purchase. For a total novice like me to be able to do all that I did in my first session is just awesome. The ease with which you can switch between the various skill level modes mid flight is perfect for a beginner like me. I can't wait to fly it again!
The only negative comment I would make is that the charger that comes with the kit was a battery charger instead of a wall charger. I had to use my car battery to charge the plane battery the first time. I would have preferred (and I will buy) a wall charger.
Assembled in a few hours, (I take my time!) Have minimal experience and have not flown in 15 yrs. Made all settings for beginner. Took off from a tightly mowed grass field. No problems. Flew like a dream. Flew 3 times without incident! I'm thrilled to be flying again....
Haven't flown in 20+ years. This built up my confidence fast, by the 5th flight I was on intermediate and quickly on expert. Fun excellent handling plane. Handles inverted well, panic button is nice to have as a security blanket. Never had to use it but it is a wonderful piece of mind knowing it's a fingertip away. Slow barrel rolls, but can complete tight, fast, high "G" loops without folding the wings. Very impressive. Excellent plane for all ages and levels of experience. I will always keep and fly this plane. I won't part from it because of its durability and forgiving characteristics. A crisp high five to you E-Flite on a wonderful, durable, and confidence building piece of training equipment!!
After trying to learn how to fly in the 1990s and destroying all the balsa planes that I had, I gave up. After walking into a hobby shop recently, I saw this plane. My son bought this plane for me. This plane has brought the fun of flying back. This plane doses exactly what it was advertised to do. A real joy to fly.
This plane is simple to fly with good ground handling and an Auto Pilot with panic button for those that want to attempt flying on their own (Not Recommended). CON: Limited range. You have to keep it in close or it will fly away especially in winds over 5 MPH.
This plane is perfect especially for the novice, although the parts are not very high quality. After about eight flights, the micro servo (EFLR7155) went bad. This is the servo for the elevator. The plane went missing, but I have found it now. However, the servo and the LiPo are broken. For this plane that was more expensive than in the Netherlands, I purchased quite a painful experience.
