THIS IS THE BEST PLANE FOR NEW PILOT
What a great plane! Awesome controls. When I purchased it for my boyfriend I was a little worried about the built in gyro as he likes more control then what a gyro typically gives. However, after flying it, we have to say it is actually one of the best features. Almost off in expert mode and fully there in beginners mode, such a nice option. The take off and landing assist really is great and makes it so much more fun to fly. The steerable nose wheel is such a great benefit. Land it then just control it back into position to take off again...voilà! No running back and forth. Did fly it into the tippy top of a 50ft cottonwood tree and had to pay a monkey (tree climbing company) to climb up and get it but the plane took practically no damage and flew just fine afterwards! Does great in wind and takes off from gravel or dirt roads/fields no problem, good thing we have a lot of dirt, gravel and open space in New Mexico!
This plane is Fun! Fun! Fun! You won't be disappointed.
Buy this. I have only flow .049 gas powered free flight models when i was a kid because I could not afford RC. Now I'm almost 60, fly MD-88s for a major airline, flew supersonic jets in the USAF, and own a 1946 J-3, but this is just as fun. Really. It flies on a human scale, around ball fields, between trees. And I am pretty unable to fly real RC. This is not real RC: it's computerized so that you move the control stick to set the attitude of the machine. It's so incredibly easy to fly this thing around trees and soccer goals because of this and I have no skill or RC experience. And it flies so slowly if you want to. It won't stall. I've had it for 3 years and I've never wrecked it. By far the most fun thing is to take my big fast Rhodesian Ridgeback out to the soccer fields and fly low passes just out of her reach. My Gosh is this a fun machine. Probably about one of the most fun items I'v purchased in my life. And I flew it off a pontoon boat on glassy water up on a lake in Minnesota, too. Too FUNNNNN!! It's beautifully made. But I did have to make a call to customer support long ago when I got it to get the radio to link up. By the way, I lost a water rudder off a float. That's when I learned parts support is fast and cheap. The only reason I knew to buy this was that I canoed over to a dude on a dock that was flying a float plane version and he told me to get it.
This plane is a lot of fun to fly, great in the wind, and easy to land. I flew it for the first time yesterday solo - my first experience with an RC plane. I have had previous experience with helis. It took off easily in beginner mode, and the reduced flight envelope was just what I needed for the first time out. I had a minor issue on a later flight in a smaller field. I tried to drop the elevator to land more steeply. As I was coming in to touch down, the throttle wouldn't turn off completely, so I overshot the landing. I guess the SAFE system in beginner mode thought my steep approach was an uncontrolled dive and tried to pull me out of it by applying throttle. Next time I fly in a tighter area where I can't fly a normal landing pattern, I'll try it in intermediate mode I think.
I had one issue when trying to install the nose gear (step 1 in the instruction manual). The nut which holds the prop on was tightened to a ridiculously high torque. It must have been over-tightened with a drill in the factory. There was nothing much to hold onto to remove the nut in order to fix the rotating prop shaft besides the prop, which is fragile and would have broken under the force necessary to get the nut off. In the end, I inserted some needle nose pliers into the space between the cowl and the prop, grabbed the prop shaft, and while also applying some force to the prop itself, had a friend back the nut off with a socket wrench and a long ratchet handle.
This was a little frustrating to solve (it was extremely tight on there), especially for a BNF kit. Other than this though, it is a great kit and a great intro into RC planes.
This is an excellent first plane. It is easy to set up and easier to fly. It handles all my crashes quite well. I have hit three palm trees, two ficus greets, and the ground (twice). Total pilot error.
